The Rewind: West hands Dimond first flag football loss in more than a year, Service volleyball team nearly upsets unbeaten East

Welcome to The Rewind, a weekly digest that puts a spotlight on the biggest stories and best performances from Alaska’s world of sports.

The seventh week of the 2023 Alaska high school football season featured several blowouts and a handful of close games at all three levels of competition and saw dominant power in 9-man stay undefeated. On the college sports scene, the University of Alaska Anchorage volleyball team dropped its first two conference matches of the season over the weekend while a cross-country runner earned weekly honors. On the national stage, one of three Alaskans in the NFL set career highs in Week 3 of the regular season, and a local product was drafted into a new professional hockey league. Also, a professional endurance athlete conquered another mountain trail and steep elevation and produced a top 10 finish.

Headlines and highlights

The top prep football game of the week was between Bettye Davis East and Dimond on Saturday night. Led by senior quarterback Austin Johnson who threw for three scores and ran in another, the Thunderbirds handed the Lynx their second conference loss of the season to knock them out of the top spot in the CIC.

“After that really tough loss last week, I knew I had to lead the team to bounce back and make sure we were going to be good,” he said. “I think it was a big confidence booster to get us back on track to where we’re supposed to be.”

It was a bounce-back performance by East, which was coming off its first loss to Alaska competition the previous week at the hands of crosstown rival and new top-seed West.

“It’s always good to get a big win after a loss,” said junior wide receiver Brandon Young, who caught two of Johnson’s touchdowns. “We want that home playoff advantage so it’s a big win.

Johnson was a dynamic playmaker on both sides of the ball as he came with a trio of clutch pass breakups in coverage as corner, including two that resulted in turnovers on downs.

“I should’ve gotten a couple picks this game but it is what it is,” he said. “I love when they keep trying me because I love competing back and forth.”

In other prep football action, Division II power Soldotna remained undefeated by recording its sixth straight 60-plus point game in yet another blowout. Seward continued to dominate 9-man football and remain undefeated with a 66-point scoring outing of its own. The longest winning streak at the Division III level was snapped when Kenai Central prevented Barrow from notching its fifth straight. West moved into the top spot by extending the longest active winning streak at the Division I level with a blowout of two-time reigning state runner-up Juneau.

Three-time reigning Cook Inlet Conference flag football champion Dimond suffered its first loss of the year in the sixth week of the season at the hands of West in a stunning low-scoring upset last Tuesday. The defeat marked the Lynx’s first in over a year and snapped a 20-game winning streak while extending the Eagles’ streak to three in a row. They went on to tack on two more victories over Chugiak and Eagle River to make it five straight wins. West outscored its three opponents in the last week by a combined 60-28 and will look to ride that momentum into a potential championship run.

On the prep volleyball scene, top-seeded East remained undefeated after avoiding an upset Tuesday as the T-birds were taken to the brink by Service on their home court. The Thunderbirds and Cougars were locked in a back and forth battle that went to five sets before the home team ultimately pulled away and prevailed in the final set.

“They definitely found where we were open at and took advantage of that,” East junior outside hitter Jirah Boma said. “We had to remember what our goals were, what motivates us to win and how much was at stake. We had to really lock in.”

Even though his team came up short of pulling off the upset, Service head coach Austin Osborne is proud of how far his team has come since the beginning of the regular season when East swept them on their home court.

“I think we’ve come a long way since that first game,” he said. “Obviously it didn’t go the way we wanted it to and this one didn’t either but we’ve made huge improvements in the way we’re able to compete and push them. East is a very good team, so you have to bring your ‘A’ game every time.”

The last big cross-country race of the high school regular season took place Saturday out at Chugiak with the annual Mustang Smokin’ Stampede. The usual suspects dominated on the girls side as the host team occupied five of the spots in the top 10 including first and second place by Alliyah Fields (19:03) and Hannah Shaha (19:05). On the boys side, Division II favorite Robbie Annett of Grace Christian suffered his first loss of the season as Palmer’s Fischer Adams edged him out by four seconds with a time of 15:48 to Annett’s 15:52.

The 2023 prep riflery season got underway Friday and saw West, South, East, and Eagle River emerge victorious in their respective season openers. Cadence Cook led the way for Chugiak with a 286-16x while Wyatt McDonald led Eagle River with a team high of 280-12x. South was led by Xander McEwen with a score of 281-15x while Dimond was led by Jacob Sims with a score of 280-14x. Henry Riffe led Service with a match-high score of 284-13x. Charlotte Bittner led West to victory with a personal record of 284-12x

On the college scene, the UAA volleyball team fell in both of their first two GNAC matches of the season. Despite getting a career-high 20 kills from senior outside hitter Nicole Blue, the Seawolves fell in four sets to Western Washington on Thursday and were swept by Simon Fraser in three sets Saturday.

UAA junior cross-country runner Cole Nash was named the GNAC Runner of the Week following his second victory of the season that he notched by finished first among a field of 134 competitors at the Bill Roe Classic on Saturday. He edged out Simon Fraser’s Sebastian Brinkman by a little more than three seconds to claim the title with an eight-kilometer time of 24:41.7. With the win, he moved into a tie with former Seawolves standout runner Marko Cheseto for the most career cross-country weekly honors at eight.

The Anchorage Wolverines dropped both games in their weekend road series with the Janesville Jets. Their first defeat came Friday in regulation and the second came the following night in overtime. The team’s leading scorer over the course of the two-game series was Japanese forward Taisetsu Ushio who found the back of the net twice in the first game.

Alaska stars shining Outside

Anchorage’s Brandon Pili set career-highs in defensive and combined snaps playing in the Miami Dolphins’ historic 70-20 blowout of the Denver Broncos on Sunday in Week 3 of the NFL season. The former Dimond multi-sport prep star recorded the first two tackles of his career including a solo on 14 defensive snaps and played four snaps on special teams as well.

Anchorage’s Clair DeGeorge will be continuing her hockey career at the professional level after being selected in the sixth-round of the inaugural draft of the Professional Women’s Hockey League. The former Alaska All-Stars standout got taken 36th overall by the Minnesota franchise and is coming off a 2022-2023 season in which she played in 18 games for Team Harvey’s in the Professional Women’s Hockey Players’ Association and finished with a goal and three assists. Her decorated resume on the ice is highlighted by being on five national title winning teams including four straight at the prep level and a Division I championship with Ohio State in 2022.

Soldotna’s Allie Ostrander finished ninth among women and 42nd overall among more than 500 racers in the Mammoth Lakes 26K race on Friday. She covered the 16.1 mile looped course that took place in California in a time of 2 hours, 27 minutes, 51 seconds. The race is part of the Golden Trail World Series and featured nearly 4,000 feet of vertical gain with a final elevation of just over 11,000 feet.
