According to the Quintillion, the telecommunications company that connects most of Northern Alaska to fiber optic lines spanning from London to Tokyo, ice was the culprit. The severed cable is about 30 miles from Oliktok Point in Prudhoe Bay — and 90 feet beneath the ice.

The University of Fairbanks Chukchi Campus and library remain closed until further notice following the outage.
