Published May 15, 2024 by Carter Dejong The University of Alaska Fairbanks International Arctic Research Center (IARC) is holding an open house from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, along UAF’s West Ridge.
“It’s an opportunity to get a huge variety of scientists all engaging with the public,” said Heather McFarland, IARC science communicator. “It’s a way to learn all about what’s happening — from climate change research, fisheries and ocean science.”
The theme of this year’s open house is “Tundra Shock” — a reference to ACDC’s 1990 hit song, “Thunderstruck.”
The event will allow attendees to catch a glimpse of some research activity not normally open to the public, such as the National Weather Service’s office.
Other events and activities include meeting puppies involved with arctic research, a virtual reality experience of the Toolik Field research station and an activity where you can use a bicycle to generate electricity.
The parking and the event itself is free.
