The Nooks’ have named Frank Ostanik, head coach of the Alaska Nanooks Men’s Basketball team, a team he is familiar with.

Ostanik steps back into the role he held from 2004 to 2007. In his previous tenure leading the program, he tallied a 55 win and 32 loss record, including a 21 and 9, plus 13 and 5 in GNAC play record in 2004-05, leading Alaska to a share of the GNAC title.

Ostanik is also a Nanook alumni. He played for UAF’s basketball team from 1990 to 1992.

Understanding the genetic structure of fish populations is vital to managing them sustainably into the future. Now cutting-edge genetic research confirms panmixia in North Pacific sablefish: They migrate and mix throughout their range to form a single genetic population.

The new study used whole genome sequencing to enhance understanding of sablefish population structure from Washington State to Alaska. Whole genome sequencing is one of the highest resolution genetic approaches available. It was the first genetic study to analyze juvenile sablefish, which should be more representative of spawning populations than the highly mobile adults.

This summer, a green laser beam has been flashing across the University of Alaska Fairbanks’ farm fields to scare off the cranes and other birds.

Cranes have a taste for the grains and seeds that researchers plant in the fields, said Kieran Gleason, manager of UAF’s Fairbanks Experiment Farm. The fields this year have rows of barley, canola, sunflower, oat and wheat, all part of varietal trials, breeding programs and cover crop research.
